Jez Averty is Senior Vice President for Subsurface in Exploration and Production Norway. Jez is a member of Equinor’s Exploration and Production Norway Management Committee and is Equinor’s Location Manager in Stavanger.
Jez has worked in the oil and gas industry for over 30 years in exploration and production. He has worked in northwest Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and North America, with office locations that include London, Oslo, Kristiansund, Luanda, Houston and Stavanger.
Jez began his career as a geologist with Amoco (UK) Exploration in London in 1992 after graduating from the University of London with a MSc in Petroleum Geology. Jez moved to Norway in 1997 to join Saga Petroleum before entering the international arena in 2000.
Jez moved to Angola in 2002 -- immediately after the end of the 27-year civil war –- where he spent 5 years working with Sonangol, the national oil company. He moved to the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 before returning to Norway in the summer of 2015 as head of exploration for Norway and the UK. Jez began in Exploration and Production in May 2018.
In recent years, Jez has increased his awareness of diversity, inclusion, and mental health. Jez is convinced that companies that really put this on the agenda will not only have employees who are happier in the workplace but also work safer and make better business decisions. Jez has set himself the goal of being an ambassador for diversity, inclusion and transparency around mental health in Equinor, and is passionate about making a difference.
An Englishman who has become a Norwegian, he is married with two boys. Jez, but not necessarily his family, love spending time at their cabin in Suldal. He is - much to his family’s dismay, trying to learn to play the cornet.
